There’s this song by a London-based rapper who goes by the name of Mojeed that rests its palm on your soul. And yes, the Nigerian-American Brooklyn native feverishly raps over a cover of Fela Kuti’s ballad “Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake Am” by Baaba Maal. That’s right, an Afrobeat blues ballad not your conventional hardcore rap track.
Baaba’s vocals on Mojeed’s track “Palava” gives off a cultural essence that you can really dig to. The vibe just makes you want to sprawl out on your couch with a fat blunt in your hand and groove to the rhythm. The video begins with the audio of steam coming from a pipe then Mojeed begins to rap about living his life the way he damn well pleases with a “no fucks given” attitude. And you can tell that he means it.
Back in 2011 he fronted the band OMG! and won the “Coors Light Search for The Coldest” North Channel where he opened up for N.E.R.D. and Pac Div. So you know he has the potential to break into the industry for real. Mojeed is currently working on a new project so the wait for new material from him won’t be too long. Expect more awesomeness soon.
In the meantime you can check out his video for the track “Palava” here.
